Based on the data submitted to the Institute of Public Health of Serbia “Dr Milan Jovanović Batut”, 18 confirmed cases of West Nile fever were registered by November 18.

Diseases were registered in persons from the territory of the North Banat (one case), Central Banat (one), South Banat (two), Srem (three), City of Belgrade (four) and South Babac (seven) districts.
From the beginning of the 2021 season until November 11, 37 epidemics caused by the West Nile virus among horses were reported in EU countries, in: Germany (16), Spain (11), Portugal (four), Hungary (three), France two) and Greece (one).
In the same period, until November 11, eight epidemics caused by the West Nile virus among birds were registered in the countries of the European Union and the European Economic Union, in Spain (seven epidemics) and Slovenia (one).
West Nile fever is a seasonal disease that is most prevalent during the period of the greatest activity of the vector – mosquitoes. It is characteristic of our geographical area that vectors become active in spring (March / April), and the period of their intensive activity is from the end of May to September. The West Nile virus transmission season in Serbia usually lasts from June to November. In the Republic of Serbia, intensive surveillance of West Nile Fever in the human population is carried out in the season of virus transmission from June to the first half of November, and passive surveillance of this disease in the rest of the year.
West Nile virus infection was officially registered for the first time in the human population on the territory of Serbia at the end of July 2012. In the period from 2012 to 2020, a total of 1,032 cases of West Nile fever were registered on the territory of the Republic of Serbia. In the same period, there were 98 deaths that could be related to West Nile fever.
During the supervision season in 2020, no cases of West Nile fever in the human population were reported in Serbia.
