WONDERFUL comitatus and Chetnik duke, major of the Serbian army Vojislav Voja Tankosic, wreaths were laid and a memorial service was held in his native Ruklada, a village on the border of Ub and Lajkovac.
In memory of the famous warrior, initiatives were launched for the street in Uba, Lajkovac and Valjevo to bear his name, as well as for a memorial bust to be erected in Ruklada.
Until the Second World War, the school in whose yard the memorial service was held was named after Duke Tankosic, and in 1944, a memorial plaque was removed from it. The marble flag was returned to the school in 2002.
– In addition to the traditional laying of wreaths, a memorial service for the great hero of Serbian history will be held this year – says Svetislav Matić, president of OO POKS Ub.
– The cult of Voja Tankosic is getting stronger, and we hope that the local self-governments will accept the initiatives to name the streets after him, because that is the least we can repay the famous duke for his heroism and feats.
Vojislav Tankosic was a major in the Serbian army, a Chetnik duke, and one of the founders of the “Unification or Death” organization, better known as the “Black Hand”. He was a participant in the May coup in 1903, when King Alexander and Queen Draga Obrenović were killed, as well as the Sarajevo assassination. He died from an Austro-Hungarian bullet in Trstenik in 1915.
– We want the commemoration of the Chetnik duke Tankosic to become a holiday – says Nenad Milosevic, president of the Ravnogorski movement Lajkovac.
– We have the support of the institutions of Lajkovac and Ub for setting up a memorial bust of the hero, born in Ruklada, and we hope that he will help us in that.
