WORLD Day of Remembrance for the Victims of Traffic Accidents was marked today on the Republic Square in Belgrade with a special program, after which 492 white balloons were symbolically released into the sky in memory of the same number of people killed in traffic last year in our country.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Aleksandar Vulin, said that the Ministry is doing everything in accordance with the law in order to reduce the number of traffic accidents, but that it is all nothing if each of us, as a participant in traffic, does not take care.
As he added, there is no justification to rush, not to respect the regulations, not to slow down next to the school …
– If the Ministry of the Interior were to ask, every drunk and drugged fool would be tried for attempted murder when we catch him drunk or drugged behind the wheel. The fact that he did not kill is just a combination of happy circumstances – Vulin pointed out.
He believes that penal policy should be significantly tightened.
– It may not save every life in traffic, but it will at least give as much satisfaction to the families of those who were killed – Vulin added.
Director of the Traffic Safety Agency Dusko Pesic said that in the 1990s, about 2,000 people died in traffic accidents in Serbia every year, and that now 500 people die annually, and specified that 492 people died in traffic in our country last year. .
He added that 13 children died last year, and this year nine children have died so far.
Pesic added that 89 young people died in the first 10 months of last year, and 75 this year.
He pointed out that the problem of suffering in traffic is not just a problem of an individual, nor of the state, but a global problem.
He reminded that the United Nations passed a resolution in 2005, which declared the third week in November as the World Day for Victims of Traffic Accidents.
The mayor of Belgrade, Zoran Radojčić, reminded that the city of Belgrade adopted a strategy on traffic safety a few years ago.
– Based on that strategy, the analysis of the data shows that the number of accidents and casualties in traffic was reduced by about 30 percent in the period after the adoption of that strategy – said Radojčić.
As he said, the goal is to reduce the number of accidents and victims in traffic by another 30% by 2025.
