Today, Orthodox believers and the Serbian Orthodox Church celebrate Arandjelovdan, ie the Holy Spirit of the Archangel Michael.
For those who think that “St. Arandjelovdan” is their glory or for those who think that “St. Arandjel” is celebrated on that day, the real name of the holiday is Cathedral of the Holy Archangel Michael – Arandjelovdan.
Arandjelovdan is a day that the church dedicated to the glory of all angels and the first among them, the Holy Archangel Michael.
The church estimates that Arandjelovdan is like a holiday, according to the number of believers elsewhere, after St. Nicholas.
Why is it celebrated in November?
Every man on the day of baptism receives his angel, who is called an angel of peace, a faithful teacher, a guardian of souls and bodies. These angels protect man’s life and health and make sure that man, due to his ignorance and carelessness, does not make any mistake.

The highest among the angels are the seven archangels, among whom is Michael, who also has the title of archistratig, after whom this holiday was named.
Good thoughts should be spread on Arandjelovdan, and the only thing you must not do is drive the poor and helpless away
On the icons, Archangel Michael is represented with wings, in ducal clothes, as a fighter, with a sword in one hand and a scales in the other, because, according to folk belief, he takes a human soul at the hour of death.
During the time of Pope Sylvester of Rome and Patriarch Alexander of Alexandria, this holiday of the architrave Michael and other celestial powers was established in November.
It is believed that Archangel Michael did not die, because he still descends among people on earth when needed, as a traveler or a beggar. And that is why he is believed to be a “living saint”. However, many do not know that wheat is primarily prepared for the souls of ancestors, and not for the soul of a saint, who is certainly alive before God. And that is why church dignitaries recommend that grain be found at every feast table.
Why in November? November is actually the ninth month of March, which is considered the moment of the creation of the world. And the ninth month after March was taken because of nine angelic acts which were first created.
Archangel Mihailo, the protector of the Nemanjić family, enjoys great respect among our people.
Customs and beliefs of today
One folk belief says that according to the weather conditions on this day, it can be determined what the year will be like. It says: as the weather is on Arandjelovdan, so it will be throughout the winter and spring!! In some parts of Serbia, this angel is also celebrated as the protector of cattle breeders because it is believed that only he can drive away wolves.
There is a belief and custom among many Christians who celebrate St. Michael, that, since they consider him a living saint, they do not prepare grain, which is unjustified and incorrect. It is necessary to prepare the grain for glory, for all the saints and all the dead are alive before God.
On Arandjelovdan, good thoughts should be spread, and the only thing you must not do is to drive the poor and powerless away. The angel, who is always with the believers, will punish that.
On this day, tradition says, it is necessary to help the poor and infirm, to give them food and drink, to give a warm word. If you do not do that, it is believed that an angel who is constantly with the believers will send a terrible punishment. Those who show the most important Christian virtue on Arandjelovdan, can expect the gentleness of this saint who will fulfill your greatest wish.
