Professor Spiridon Sfetas, a great friend of the Serbian people, a lecturer in Balkan history in Thessaloniki, who also wrote for our “Večernje novosti”, has passed away.
Born in 1960 in the village of Koilada near Larisa, he graduated from the History Department of the Faculty of Philosophy in Thessaloniki. He completed postgraduate studies in the history of Eastern and Southeastern Europe and Slavic Studies at the University of Munich, with a doctoral dissertation on the Macedonian language.
During his military service, he served as an interpreter for the German and Bulgarian languages, and he was also fluent in English, French, Russian and Serbian. In 1999, he became a lecturer in the modern history of the Balkans at the Department of History and Archeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. He is the author of many studies and articles on the history of the Balkans, but also on current events, and has participated in many conferences around the world. He signed the review and foreword to the book “Greece: War for Independence, State Creation and the Revival of the Nation”, by Dusan Spasojevic, Serbian Ambassador to Greece.
