Today, half a century after the first promise, the construction of the Belgrade metro will begin on the MAKIŠKO field. The Minister of Finance, Siniša Mali, announced that everything is ready for the works to begin and that today is a historic day that has been waiting for generations of our citizens!

Mali pointed out that many previous authorities had plans to build a subway, but no one has ever done anything concrete on that issue. He emphasized that the current government has been actively working on this capital project for a long time, which is of great, strategic importance for Belgrade and Serbia.
– The metro that is being built will be the most modern possible, fully automated, without a train driver – Mali wrote on his “Instagram”. – The first line 21.1 kilometers long with 21 stations will be completed in 2028, and will connect Zeleznik and Mirijevo. The second, from Bežanija and Mirijevo, 21 kilometers long, will have 23 stations, and it will intersect with Savski trg. Completion is planned for 2030.
With the introduction of the metro in the public transport system, the reorganization of the existing city traffic lines is planned. Metro routes have been harmonized with the development of the “BG train”, and it is planned to introduce four city railway lines and three suburban lines. The construction of the subway, which is part of the “Serbia 2025” project, will make life easier for citizens, contribute to a healthier way of life for people, and at the same time will affect the growth of Serbia’s GDP, Minister Mali pointed out.
Yesterday, the Deputy Mayor of Belgrade, Goran Vesić, posted a picture of a construction board on his Facebook profile, which indicates which works will be performed in this phase of the construction of the subway depot. He stated that today, when the works start, it will be exactly 50 years, 11 months and 18 days from the first promise.
– There have been good and bad times for these half a century, but there has never been any political determination, strong leadership, money, legal and urban preconditions to build the subway. Now, for the first time, we have it – Vesić wrote. – Belgrade thanks President Vučić for standing behind the project of building the subway and because the Republic of Serbia will provide between 4.4 and 4.6 billion euros for the construction of the first two lines. Belgrade, with the largest budget in history, which will amount to 1.345 billion euros in 2022, would not be able to build two subway lines so quickly on its own.
As Vesić specified, the embankment of Makiško polje will first start with 1.4 million cubic meters of sand on about 82 hectares:
– After the embankment, we start building the construction for the railway, the base of the depot, the bus terminus, parking for users, the first station, sewerage, two collectors.
MORE THAN 200 KILOMETERS
– By 2028, we will have 223 kilometers of city and suburban railways, as well as 42.6 kilometers of new tram network and 130 new trams – stated Vesić. – The value of this project will be more than 1.6 billion euros. People living in suburban municipalities will have a city train to Belgrade every ten to 15 minutes in rush hour and every 45 minutes outside rush hour.
