COLUMNIST of the American newspaper “Business Insider”, Konstantin Atlamazoglu, pointed out the strategic importance of the Black Sea region that connects the Caucasus with Europe.
– There are Russian ports here that cannot freeze. The Black Sea occupies an important place in the architecture of Moscow’s defense. The supremacy in these waters not only ensures the security of the country, but also enables it to expand its influence and challenge NATO, the author writes.
The North Atlantic Alliance’s navy has strengthened its presence in the region, however, geographical restrictions and international law create obstacles to the fight against Russia, while other countries are inferior in terms of its military capabilities, he complained.
Romania has three frigates, seven corvettes, an old “Kilo” class submarine and auxiliary ships. As the columnist stated, the situation is not better in Bulgaria either. Her Navy consists of four frigates, three corvettes and minesweepers. Ukraine is trying to renew its naval forces, and Georgia has only a coast guard, the article explains.
– Turkey has a significant and combat-ready fleet, however, its good relations with Moscow and alienation from NATO raise doubts about its commitment to the Alliance, Atlamazoglu is convinced.
In his opinion, the Black Sea has turned into a “Russian lake”. Russia implemented several reforms in 2008 and in the period 2011-2020. years after which the Navy became more agile. The Black Sea Fleet has three Admiral Grigorovic-class missile frigates, Krivak-class guard ships, the Moscow missile cruiser, and six new diesel-electric submarines. At sea, they are supported by a large number of auxiliary ships that strengthen the capabilities of the Navy, it is stated in the material.
Moscow is also increasing the number of systems for the so-called Black Sea security zone (Anti-Access / Area Denial, A2AD). These are coastal anti-ship missiles, operational-tactical complexes, radars and anti-aircraft defense. In addition, the navy has been supplemented by the recently formed 22nd Military Corps in Crimea and with two air divisions also located on the peninsula. They will help protect Russian ships and deter the enemy army, the journalist concluded.
