PE “Vojvodinashume” has started to build a shelter for deer near the top of Lisičja glava on the Vršac mountains, which is a continuation of a large national project of returning that game to free nature, where it is almost extinct.

Currently, wooden poles are being buried on an area of 4.5 hectares, after which a wire fence with an electric shepherd will be set up, so that the herd, which will be temporarily inhabited there, will be protected from wolves and other smaller predators.
However, that investment upset some mountaineers and nature lovers, who rebelled against the wiring of the Vojvodina mountain via social networks. The Forest Administration “Vrsac”, which is implementing the project, however, assures that this is an extremely important undertaking, which will not harm anyone. On the contrary.
– Deer game in the Vršac Mountains, due to human negligence, has been present only in migrations for half a century. That is why “Vojvodinashume” decided to, along with three other places in the province, form a farm there, so that we could raise deer ourselves, which we will gradually release into our forests. In that way, we will return a great debt to nature – explains Cedomir Karović, the first man of the University of Vršac.
That mission began two years ago, by fencing an area of 45 hectares above the village of Markovac towards the top of Vršišor, where a breeding farm with a breeding herd of 51 deer, brought from the Romanian Carpathians, was formed. The population has now doubled, so the conditions have been met for 20 individuals to be sold to the Forest Administration, and 20 to be transferred to the mentioned shelter in December, which will be completed in ten days.

– Practice has shown that deer from the farm should not be released into the wild immediately, because they would wander off. It is necessary for them to have a surname and to be abducted in a shelter. That is why we make it in the heart of the Vršac Mountains, in order to accept that environment as our territory. In the spring, they will be able to walk freely in the forest, and mountaineers and other sharp-eyed visitors will be able to see them during the walk, which is a kind of privilege – says Karović.
Man’s encounter with this game, he points out, will not be dangerous, because deer retreat in front of people. You only need to be more careful during the roar, which occurs in the Vršac Mountains in October.
RETURNED THEM SMELL
The DEBT to nature has already been returned to some extent, because about twenty deer just returned to the Vršac Mountains, smelling the herd from the farm. They came from Romania and Deliblato Sands and settled around the fence. Females even calved there, and during the roar of deer, fights of males through the wire were recorded.

A SHELTER is being built next to a hiking trail. It is in that part of the future fenced area that the forest has been cleared, in order to form a pasture, on which deer will come out, and walkers, as in a zoo, will be able to take pictures of them. They can now do that at the kennel in Markovac.
