Today, the EU COUNCIL gave clear support to Serbia and its European path, and in the coming weeks, member states are expected to agree on the possible opening of new chapters or clusters with Serbia.
– When it comes to Serbia, many ministers emphasized that progress has been made and that is a positive assessment. There were also some interventions that indicated the steps that Serbia still has to take in order to open new chapters, said the State Secretary of Slovenia, Gasper Dovzan.
In response to Tanjug’s question about how the possibility of Serbia opening new clusters by the end of this year, Dovzan assessed that “the general atmosphere is good and Serbia has support.”
When it comes to the steps that should still be taken, Dovžan states that the issue of constitutional amendments in the country was mentioned among the EU ministers, which will be voted on by the end of the month.
Enlargement Commissioner Oliver Varheji also took part in today’s debate on enlargement in the EU Council, expressing the European Commission’s support for opening new clusters with Serbia.
– The position of the European Commission is clear, said at the end of the meeting the Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders.
Dovzan, who also chaired the meeting of the EU Council, says that there are “positive assessments” among EU ministers, especially when it comes to the progress of Serbia and Northern Macedonia.
The ministerial meeting said that the EU must maintain credibility when it comes to the enlargement process and that the candidate countries must be rewarded for the progress they are making on the EU path.
