The meeting of ministers discussed the future cooperation between Serbia and Bulgaria in the field of transport, as well as current activities and plans for improving the infrastructure on the railway and road Corridor X, which connects our two countries.
The topic of establishing Green Corridors at the Kalotina-Gradina road border crossing was especially emphasized, in order to overcome waiting at the borders, which, as the line ministers estimate, have an extremely negative impact not only on traffic and transport, but also on connections and improving relations between the two countries. Momirovic and Aleksijev emphasized that the topic of improving the capacity of border crossings, both railway and road crossing between Serbia and Bulgaria, is of the greatest importance for mutual development.
– We invest, build and design more than 1200 kilometers of highways and expressways, but when we reach the borders, we will meet what you all had the opportunity to see: kilometers of columns, primarily truck traffic. It is something that destroys our economy, significantly increases the costs of our product, and that is what affects our economy as much as Bulgaria – said Momirović.
On this occasion, Minister Momirović announced the beginning of the reconstruction of the railway from Niš to Dimitrovgrad, for which he expects that the electrified railway will be completely reconstructed at the beginning of 2024.
Bulgarian Minister Aleksiev pointed out that Bulgaria, as an EU country, supports Serbia on its European path, as well as in the field of traffic development.
– Bulgaria has started with the reconstruction of the railway from Sofia to the border with Serbia, and I personally insisted that it be a priority when it comes to infrastructure development. In parallel with the development of the railway network in Bulgaria towards Serbia, the Europe highway from Sofia to the Kalotina border crossing is being built – said Aleksijev.
He announced that Bulgaria would help Serbia to finance the railway from Nis to Dimitrovgrad from European funds.
The bilateral meeting between the ministers was also attended by the director of the Transport Community, Matej Zakonjšek, who expressed satisfaction with the approaching completion of Corridor X, which, according to him, will be important not only for Serbia and Bulgaria, but for the whole of Europe.
– An important topic of conversation was the railway and its modernization. As we know, support for the railway and the modernization of that network is absolutely necessary for this part of Europe. What Serbia is doing in the modernization of its railway will be of exceptional importance for Bulgaria as well – said Zakonjšek.
