NASA, through the US Department of Energy, has announced an advertisement for companies that can design a nuclear reactor on the Moon.
That reactor is a key part of NASA’s Artemis plan for a human mission to the moon and setting up a permanent base. According to that plan, a mission to Mars would be sent from the base on the Moon.
NASA is looking for a reactor that can be sent to the moon and work there in conjunction with solar cells, batteries and fuel cells, in order to provide energy for the production of water and other necessities for the base.
According to the Artemis plan, people should land on the Moon in 2024, but that date will probably be moved.
NASA plans to include other government agencies and private companies in the mission.
At the competition for the Moon’s nuclear power plant, five million dollars were offered for the conceptual solution, and the application deadline is February 17, 2022.
