The FIRST spike was stabbed only a few days ago. This marked the beginning of the construction of a high-speed railway from Novi Sad to Kelebija.
In a few months, the rails will go from Belgrade to the city under Petrovaradin, at a speed of up to 200 kilometers per hour. At the same pace, further to the border with Hungary, it will probably be possible at the end of 2024. When we will arrive from the Serbian to the Hungarian capital in two hours and five minutes, depends primarily on the neighbors. They are expected to complete their part of the work in the first half of 2025.
Works are planned, in progress or nearing completion that will provide Serbia with 1,000 kilometers of arranged railways.
– The construction of a high-speed railway up to 200 kilometers per hour between Belgrade and Budapest is the largest and most important investment and infrastructure project in this part of Europe – says Nenad Stanisavljević from “Serbian Railway Infrastructure”.
– The construction of the Belgrade-Budapest high-speed railway is the first cross-border project within the cooperation between China and the countries of Central and Eastern Europe, which are jointly implemented by Serbia, Hungary and China. When the high-speed line is completed, the train will travel on this international route in less than three hours.
In parallel with the railway to Hungary, the route Nis – Dimitrovgrad is being modernized. As we have recently heard, the project of a new section of 108 kilometers should be completed by 2024. This work includes the reconstruction and electrification of the existing railway and the construction of a new single-track electrified bypass railway.
On the last day of September, works on modernization and rehabilitation of the Nis – Brestovac railway on the international railway Corridor 10 began in Donji Medjurovo. Reconstruction of that section costs 59.9 million euros, 85 percent is financed from grants provided from the IPA 2015 fund, and 15 percent from budget of Serbia.
Trains will be able to run at this speed of 120 kilometers per hour on this part of the railway.
The Belgrade – Nis railway is part of the international Corridor 10, which connects Central and Western Europe with Greece, Turkey and the Middle East. The reconstruction of 228 kilometers will cost around 1.8 billion euros. The modernization of the railway Corridor 10 through Serbia is the reconstruction of the existing railways and the extension of the second track on the sections where single-track railways were built. The journey from Belgrade to Nis will take less than two hours.
Along with Corridor 10, the Bar railway is the most important railway route in Serbia. The section from Resnik to Valjevo, 77.6 kilometers long, was reconstructed three years ago. It is planned to continue the works on the sections from Valjevo to Vrbnica, ie to the border with Montenegro, with a total length of 207 kilometers. The financing was provided from a loan of the Russian Federation worth 230 million euros.
