CITIES AGAINST DRUGS – Give a helping hand. This is the name of the campaign launched at the end of November, the month of the fight against addiction, by the Association “Izlazak”, the Office for the Fight against Drugs of the Serbian Government and seven local self-government units: Loznica, Sabac, Sremska Mitrovica, Bor, Majdanpek, Backa Palanka and Novi Market.

As they stated in their address to the public, full social awareness of addiction diseases is necessary, in order to make progress and reduce the morbidity rate of the population.
– We know that the individual is responsible for his actions, but we, as a society, are responsible to provide support to the individual in order to make the most of his life potential – it is stated in the statement.
As part of the “I choose recovery” project, the Going Out Association and the Government Office for the Fight against Drugs organized numerous meetings throughout Serbia, which were attended by more than 250 representatives from 77 municipalities. Emphasis was placed on rural areas, where there was a lack of finances, human resources, professional training and education, but also ineffective prevention, disinterest of parents, inadequate legal frameworks. The lack of information was noticed, both by the addicts themselves about the possibilities of treatment, and by the professionals who meet with them and their families. All this leads to a continuous growth trend of the addicted population, they say in “Izlaska”.
Due to the importance of the role of the local community, Multidisciplinary teams have been formed at the local level, consisting of representatives of state institutions, local governments, institutions and civil society organizations. Since there is almost no environment in which there is no drug use, the “Going Out” Association hopes that the campaign will succeed in uniting all actors who directly or indirectly deal with this problem.
