The medical part of the Crisis Staff will request at the session of this body, scheduled for tomorrow at 3 pm, at the urgent request of medics, due to the appearance of a new strain of corona virus, which is getting closer to Serbia, that passengers from all countries where the omicron strain is confirmed quarantine. It is more certain, however, that this measure will apply only to those who come from the region of South Africa.
Dr Verica Jovanovic, director of the Institute for Public Health “Dr Milan Jovanovic Batut”, confirmed on Monday, for “Novosti”, that this institute has prepared a list of countries from which a special entry regime will apply, but she could not specify when it will start. to apply. They did that according to the instructions of the World Health Organization. The list currently includes seven South African countries – South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Mozambique and Malawi, and it is currently being considered how inspections at airports or border crossings will be monitored: whether PCR testing will be carried out or whether passengers will be required. refer to 14-day home quarantine.
The list of countries where the omicron strain has been confirmed is getting longer, and many countries are already closing borders for travelers from high-risk areas. From European countries, omicron has so far, in addition to Austria, been detected by Switzerland, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Italy, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Portugal, and France is awaiting confirmation for eight suspicious cases …
Omicron seems to be spreading faster than all previous corona variants, and it is feared that it could be more dangerous. It is not yet known whether the existing vaccines also protect against the new mutant strain.
Dr. Predrag Kon, an epidemiologist and member of the Crisis Staff, says that the appearance of a new variant of the corona shows the evolutionary potential of the virus, that is, that the virus will survive and will keep coming back to us:
– The big question is how much potential the omicron variant has and how much power it will have to spread all over the world, however, some changes will be certain. It is likely to have greater transmissibility, but this must be demonstrated in practice. It is now very important to examine whether the vaccines we have work, as well as whether the current natural immunity is sufficient for protection – said Dr. Kon.
Dr. Zoran Bekić, coordinator of the vaccination point at the Belgrade Fair, says that he is more afraid of relaxing for the holidays and the upcoming holidays, and especially of a possible new delay in vaccination, than of omicron.
– The first dose is immunized daily between 2,000 and 3,600 people, the second between 3,500 and 5,000, and the third between 15,000 and 23,000 people – says Dr. Bekić. – At the end of October, we applied between 35,000 and 45,000 doses a day. We relax again and let the crown take the initiative, which has cost us dearly every time. In our country, the percentage of those immunized is a little more than 58 percent, which is small from the point of view of collective immunity, and we will not achieve anything if we stop now, and we have slowed down – says Dr. Bekić.
The epidemiological situation is better: on Monday, the virus was confirmed in 2,180 people, while 49 patients lost the battle with covid. The reduction in the number of newly infected currently allows KBC “Zvezdara” to leave the covid regime after two months and 10 days. The director of this KBC, prof. Dr. Petar Svorcan says that they hope to receive the first invisible patients at the end of this or the beginning of next week.
Epidemiologists, however, are afraid of worsening, and they expressed that fear, even before the appearance of a new strain of the virus, due to the upcoming holidays and the arrival of the diaspora. The proposal to start the school holidays because of that will be presented on December 20, officially at the Crisis Staff.
HIGH GLOBAL RISK
OMICRON poses a very high global risk, the World Health Organization (WHO) said, urging that vaccination of priority groups be accelerated. It was announced that they were vaccinated at the risk of contracting a new strain, but in a small percentage. No deaths from omicron strain have been reported so far. At the initiative of the British presidency, the G7 health ministers also held an emergency meeting on a new variant of the crown. The highest American official for infectious diseases, Anthony Fauci, said that it would take about two weeks to get the final information about omicron. He believes that existing vaccines are likely to provide “some degree of protection against severe cases of covid.” (DDS)
