THE SESSION of the Crisis Staff for the fight against kovid 19 will be held tomorrow, in addition to the new strain of coronavirus – omicron, one of the main items on the agenda will be whether the holiday should start earlier, on December 20, which the medical part advocates.

The day before the spears will be broken around that, the president of the Association of Pediatricians of Serbia, prof. Dr. Georgios Konstantinidis says that going to school in compliance with the measures is not crucial for the spread of the epidemic or for its eventual stopping in case of termination of going to school.
He also notes that not going to school should be considered in the context of the lack of education of an entire generation of students, and in that sense, the benefits and harms should always be weighed.
– According to my knowledge and my contacts, which I have with colleagues from other European countries, the school is not interrupted there, that is, everything is going as planned before the start of school. That would correspond to the traffic light in our country. As for the story with the school in general, it is our opinion, and mine personally, that it does not have a decisive influence on the spread of the virus among children. Of course, if there are no contacts, there will be no transmission of the virus, however, the fact is that not going to school does not mean breaking off contact, especially during celebrations and everything else that comes to us – says prof. Dr. Constantinidis.
Prof. Konstantinidis is of the opinion that the statements that the number of patients decreased terribly with the termination of school, ie with the previous vacation, are professionally unfounded.
– Because the number in the total population has also decreased, so it is normal that it will decrease among children as well. Simply, I think that going to school with adherence to measures is not crucial for the spread of the epidemic or for its eventual stopping in case of not going to school. I have information that in Ireland, and in some western countries, they also stopped testing all students if the corona virus appears in a certain class, which is the custom and the rule. It turned out that the number of positive asymptomatic students is less than two percent, and that is insignificant – our interlocutor states.
When it comes to going on vacation earlier, he only keeps a reserve in case a new strain of coronary virus omicron appears in our country as well.
– In principle, I have not changed the attitude I had regarding schools, with the proviso that I keep a small reserve in case an omicron strain appears in our country, which is, for now, unknown. Always not coming to school should be considered in the context of lack of education, now entire generations of students, and the benefits and harms should always be weighed there – notes prof. Dr. Constantinidis.
Epidemiologist Predrag Kon was the first to state last week that students should go on vacation before St. Nicholas. He explained that this should be done before our citizens from abroad start returning to Serbia for the holidays.
He then emphasized that there was a lot of talk about going on holiday earlier.
– We need to talk in advance. The Ministry of Education should be organized. We from the medical part of the Krizng headquarters think that it is useful for the vacation to start earlier. We talked about dates, but it’s not okay to go out with that. Due to the Catholic Christmas, our citizens already come from the countries where the delta strain shoots around St. Nicholas. It is realistic that children do not go to school during the period when people who bring the virus come. The Ministry of Education has stated that it will harmonize. I think it all started on time. There is not much time – said Dr. Kon.
According to the latest statements from the Ministry of Education, the holiday should start as planned, at the end of the year, and the education unions are not in favor of that.
As they spoke for our portal, they cannot manage to organize the end of the first semester in just two weeks, as much as they would have left if the winter break was moved by Kon’s order.
– It is too early for the winter holidays to start before Saint Nicholas. And it is too late to let us know now. There is still a lot of work to be done to complete the semester. We now have to do everything in 19 days that we would otherwise do in 30. It is not possible – says Jasna Janković, president of the Union of Education Workers of Serbia (USPRS).
However, as we learned yesterday at the Crisis Staff, the medical part is still in favor of the holiday starting 10 days earlier.
