A human mass and a man with a big heart, a top professional and a builder LEFT us. Engineer Milutin Mrkonjić is gone forever.

This is what Goran Maslar, the editor of the RTS “Corridors” show, says for “Novosti”, who traveled tens of thousands of kilometers with Mrkonjić, touring the works on the reconstruction of Serbia after the NATO aggression.
– He loved his profession, he liked it when I said engineer Mrkonjić in the reports. He said: “I am an engineer, I am not a politician” – says Maslar.
– He loved people, and they loved him. He had a unique relationship with the field workers. He always hugged them and called them “sons”. He loved to help them, to reward them. It was important to him that the job be completed before the deadline. Everything had to be realized without delay.
Maslar says that at that time he spent more time with Mrkonjić than with his family.
– He hurried to help normalize life. He was able to invite us to meet on the Varadinska Duga bridge at one in the morning or to leave for Valjevo at three o’clock in the middle of winter. He told us to hurry, because the people, who have lost their roof over their heads, need to move into new apartments. I remember that he came to many events straight from the field, in a T-shirt and jeans. He didn’t have time to change. He was a bohemian, he loved the cafe, but his job came first. Smacker, charmer, witty. He was also loved by those who had different political views than his own.
The last time Mrkonjić and Maslar saw each other was just before he left for the hospital. In a cafe across the street from Mrkonjic’s building.
– He never talked about the disease, he threw everything into a joke – says Maslar. – “Son, everything will be as it should be, don’t worry,” he told me. We thought he would win this battle too …
