The KINGDOM of Yugoslavia was one of the few countries in the world that did not have diplomatic relations with the USSR until the beginning of the Second World War, due to the October Revolution and the murder of the Russian Tsar Nicholas!
While the USA, Great Britain and France already cooperated extensively with the Bolshevik government (due to financial interests) in Russia, Serbia and Yugoslavia did not change their position.
And another interesting detail, on the same topic, which comes from Hermann Neubacher’s book of memoirs entitled “Special Task Balkans”. Neubacher was Hitler’s special commissioner for the entire Balkans and spent a long period in Serbia. Due to the advance of the Red Army from the east towards the Balkans, he tried to realize an interesting idea!
Namely, he planned to make an agreement with all Chetnik units in Serbia on the one hand, and with Germany on the other.
When he says “all Chetniks”, he meant all the formations that operated under that name in Serbia at the time, regardless of whether they were under the command of Draža Mihajlović, or were, so to speak, “renegades” who fought in some his war and only in his region.
The MEETING was held somewhere in the vicinity of Zaječar. The German proposal was that they arm all Chetnik units and equip them with the latest weapons and equipment, so that they could help the German Army in the fight against the Red Army. Germany’s only condition was that all present representatives give “guarantees” that they will not use the surrendered German weapons in the fight against the Germans!
At that meeting, a young Chetnik officer stood up and said that the problem was not the guarantee that the weapons would not be used against the Germans, because it was more a question of military and human honor, but that it was an unsolvable problem to take the guarantee that his men would want to shoot at Russian soldiers ! Herman asked him how his Chetnik soldiers could shoot at Serbian communists and not shoot at Russian communists. The officer said that it was true, and that the Chetniks were fighting against the Communists, but that the fact that it was the Russians completely changed the matter, and that the fight between the Serbs and the Russians could not be counted on! It turned out that his position was shared by all present representatives of the Chetnik units, and the meeting ended without any agreement!
WE RETURN to the list of “attackers” and “collaborators” of Hitler in the attack on the USSR, which was published in the previous continuation of this column. I don’t know if I need to explain anything further here. Can we glimpse the long shadows from the distant past that fall from this list, reach all the way to the present day and affect the current political relations between Russia and Europe? Can you understand the weight of the news about the demolition of the monuments dedicated to the victims of the Red Army in the fight against the fascists during their expulsion from many countries on this list, which were previously under German occupation? And can you imagine how the Russian Federation and its leadership and people accept the news that in many of these countries monuments are being erected to the fallen members of the fascist units listed here who, side by side with German soldiers, fought on the Eastern Front against the USSR in try to occupy and destroy both Moscow and the USSR and the Russian people as the biggest and main bearers of the USSR’s statehood!? Is it strange then, when the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, warns so many times that we must not “allow the rewriting of history and the results of the Second World War” and that we must not allow the “vampirization of fascism”?
How accurate this list is and that it is not unfounded is best shown by the numerous trials before the court in Nuremberg, which were conducted against all the commanders of the mentioned units, from many countries of Europe that collaborated with the fascists and attacked the USSR, and which in the end, nevertheless, tried for war crimes!
And a FEW words about the sacrifices made by the USSR in the fight against fascism, that is, Germany and its “European allies”, who, it seems, united Europe for the first time even then! United against the USSR or Russia, it doesn’t matter!
And the victims of the USSR are colossal, almost incomprehensible to the normal human mind. Ishan Tharoor, in the Washington Post, dated May 6, 2015, in an article titled “Don’t Forget How the Soviet Union Saved the World from Hitler,” provides some startling details. For example, according to one calculation, for every American soldier killed in the fight against the Germans, 80 USSR soldiers died!
The author, in the same article, quotes the distinguished British historian Max Hastings who wrote in his book “The World at War, 1939-1945”: “The Red Army was the main engine of the destruction of Nazism. The Soviet Union paid the worst price: it is estimated that around 26 million citizens of the USSR died during World War II, including as many as 11 million soldiers. At the same time, the Germans suffered 75% of the war losses fighting the Red Army!
In their analysis, Marijan Kubik and Dušan Opačić noticed an attempt to attribute even the successes of the Red Army to American aid, and not to its military power and capabilities. According to the Lend-Lease Act, the US could grant loans only to countries “whose defense is important to the interests of the US”.
And NOW a digression, but what kind… The USA almost approved such a law for Ukraine. Therefore, the defense of Ukraine “has significance for the interests of the USA”! He is simply fascinated by America’s commitment to humanity, democracy and freedom.
I am surprised that they did not pass such a law, for example, in favor of the authorities of Afghanistan, when they were running away from it regardless! And yes, there is nothing “interesting for US interests” in that poor country! And there are so many things in Ukraine of interest to the US. For example, I am sure that the long border with Russia is the most interesting for the USA in Ukraine. Every American loves that border. I can only think if the USA would react if Russia “loved” Mexico in the same way, because of the border with the USA, as the USSR once suddenly loved Cuba, not only because of the ideological closeness of the social systems, but also because of the beauty and proximity of the beautiful sea border of Cuba with USA!?
Let’s get back to the topic. According to that law, the USA helped the USSR, believe it or not, only 0.1% of the total American aid given to Great Britain and other countries of the world. And how many times have you heard how the USA helped the USSR and if it wasn’t for that help, Germany would have defeated it! Aha!
The entry of American and British troops into Normandy began on June 6, 1944, when the USSR had already broken the “backbone and strength” of the German army, which was in constant retreat before the Red Army.
JUST before the beginning of the Second World War, on June 24, 1940, diplomatic relations were established between the Soviet Union and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia! And on the night between April 5 and 6, 1941, an agreement on friendship and non-aggression was signed between these two countries. The Kingdom of Yugoslavia, i.e. the new government led by General Simović, after the March 27 coup, hoped that this would ease Germany’s pressure on it, and Stalin hoped that this agreement would perhaps bring Hitler back to the negotiating table.
